How To Make Chlorine Gas And HCL Or Bleach

Learn how to make Chlorine gas (Cl2) and turn that into HCL (hydrochloric acid) or a bleach product.

To do this process you will need just a few simple tools and two ingredients. The tools you will need are a battery. A 9 volt battery or higher would be preferred. Some wire and two different sized glass or other non-reactive containers that can be capped off and some water and salt or salt water from the ocean.

If you have a DC motor, you can use it in place of the battery. A simple DC motor you can use is an old cooling fan from a computer. Normally a battery powers the motor. However, if you spin the fan it is now a generator and the leads that went to the battery will now produce an electric current. The faster the fan turns the more electricity it produces.

If you are making your salt water solution yourself, then about 8 teaspoons of salt for each cup of water is excellent. Obviously you can scale this up as needed.

To proceed with the process pour some water into your container. Fill it to the top with water. Place this container inside the larger container. Now run leads from the battery and allow them to drop into the saltwater.

A current will start flowing and Chlorine gas will form on the positive wire. Hydrogen gas will form on the negative wire. Both will bubble up through the water and escape. However, Chlorine gas is much heavier than air. This property of the gas means that it will flow like water and settle in the bottom of a container as long as the air is still. Having no breeze is very important.

If you have a second container holding the first then the Chlorine gas will fill the first container above the water line and then spill over into the second and fill it. After a while you can very slowly remove the first container, so as not to disturb the chlorine gas too much.

Pour some water slowly into the second container and cap off. Shake the container and the water will mix with the chlorine gas to form a solution of water and HCL, aka hydrochloric acid. The amount of water to chlorine gas will determine how concentrated the solution is and therefore how strong the solution will be.

One pound of chlorine gas yields one gallon of 12.5 percent bleach.

Improvements to the process
If you have access to better components, then you can greatly improve the process. One improvement is to have a carbon or graphite electrode on the positive side of the battery and an aluminum electrode on the negative side.

If you have access to lab equipment such as flasks and beakers and glass tubes you can greatly improve the process and virtually eliminate loss. The setup would be to have the battery terminals in a corked container with a tube running to another container that only has pure water in it. As the gas is produced it will go through the tube and bubble up through the water in the not perfectly sealed container.

The gas dissolves in the pure water to create the acid or bleach depending on how strong the solution is.

WARNING: This reaction produces toxic gas. Chlorine is toxic and highly corrosive. So if you smell the chlorine gas you should leave the area immediately. Use common sense and you should be fine. This should only be done if you are in a SHTF situation when all of the lawyers have already died.
